This black malleable iron reducing coupling is used to connect two female-threaded steel or iron pipe sections of different diameters in threaded piping systems. With a 2-1/2 inch FIP inlet and 1-1/2 inch FIP outlet, it allows for direct size transitions in water, steam, air, or gas lines across industrial, commercial, and mechanical systems.
The coupling is manufactured from malleable iron and coated with a protective black finish to resist corrosion in non-potable and natural gas service lines. Threads are machined to NPT specifications for full engagement and reliable sealing when used with appropriate joint compounds.
Ensure all mating threads are clean and free of debris prior to assembly. Apply thread sealant or PTFE tape as specified for the media being conveyed. Tighten using appropriate pipe wrenches while avoiding over-torque, which may cause stress cracking or thread damage.
This fitting is not intended for use in potable water systems unless otherwise specified and listed. Consult project specifications and local code requirements before use in pressure systems.
Malleable iron is often selected for its excellent mechanical properties, including shock resistance and compressive strength. Black fittings are typically used where corrosion protection from galvanization is not needed and where higher operating temperatures are present.
